Overview
KHADAU – Footwear Design for Pratap at India Couture Week 2023
For India Couture Week 2023, I had the privilege of designing and crafting bespoke footwear for the acclaimed fashion label Pratap. The project, titled KHADAU, was an exploration of heritage craftsmanship reimagined through a modern lens, paying homage to traditional Indian aesthetics while pushing the boundaries of couture footwear.
Drawing inspiration from antique Indian anklets and the cultural symbolism of traditional khadau (wooden sandals), I conceptualized a striking platform heel that captured the essence of India’s rich craft legacy. The silhouette featured a bold 3-inch platform, meticulously hand-carved to ensure comfort, balance, and a sculptural profile. A distinctive circular hole beneath the heel added a dramatic and unconventional visual element.
Each pair was constructed using premium materials and involved intensive handcrafting techniques. From intricate silver embellishments and embossed details to finely stitched leather straps, every component was purposefully designed. Decorative elements like payal (anklets) and metallic chains adorned the footwear, enhancing its narrative while echoing the grandeur of Pratap’s couture ensembles.
One of the most symbolic features of the design was the red circular dot positioned at the toe—referencing the bindi and red ceremonial markings seen in Hindu wedding traditions. This detail seamlessly tied the footwear to themes of festivity, ritual, and identity.
The final creation was not only a visually compelling statement piece but also a celebration of Indian artisanship fused with contemporary fashion. The footwear was lauded for its innovation, craftsmanship, and synergy with Pratap’s collection—leaving a lasting impression at ICW 2023.
